Planting Kindness – Cultivating Leadership

Harvesting Success – Feeding CNY

Watch us grow is a garden approach to help educate senior, disabled and veteran homeowners start a small vegetable garden. The program was first introduced by a student at New Hartford High School in 2013. The project earned her a 2013 Teen All Stars recognition and has since planted roots in our community as a physician’s assistant. Students form groups and select a group captain. They raise the funds by developing an age appropriate funding plan necessary to create the garden and recruit 3-5 volunteers as group members to plant the vegetables. The low-income residents take care of the garden which in returns provides vegetables throughout the growing season. Every team must be represented by a least 1 parent or legal guardian to act as the group’s advisor.

The senior friendly gardens range from raised beds to container gardens based on the needs and requirements of the senior homeowner participants.
